Ridesharing apps are a major part of our everyday lives. Usually, we don’t think twice before hopping in an Uber or Lyft. But, we are putting our trust in the hands of our drivers when we use these services. Read on to learn more about Uber/Lyft accidents in Florida.

Ridesharing Laws in Florida

In 2017, Governor Scott signed the Uber/Lyft Law, which requires those who drive for ridesharing companies or “transportation network companies” to meet minimum insurance requirements. The law requires these drivers to carry at least $50,000 for death and bodily injury per person, $100,000 for death and bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property insurance. The law also requires drivers to pass a background check that includes both their criminal and driving records. Ridesharing companies may not hire drivers who have been convicted of any of the following within the past five years:

  • Any felony
  • A misdemeanor for DUI, reckless driving, hit and run, or fleeing a police officer
  • Any crimes of lewdness or indecent exposure
  • A misdemeanor for sexual battery or any violent offenses
  • Driving on a suspended or revoked license

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim?

If you have been injured due to another party’s negligence, you may be entitled to recover compensation. In order to recover the compensation you deserve, you will have to make sure to file your personal injury claim on time. This deadline is known as a statute of limitations. Generally, in Florida, the statute of limitations for a personal injury accident is four years. This means that failing to file within four years from the date of the accident will likely mean losing your opportunity to recover the compensation you deserve. Four years may sound like a long time, but it is easy to forget important deadlines when you are recovering from a serious injury. To avoid missing any deadlines, make sure to contact a skilled personal injury attorney.
