This week, May 9-15, is hurricane preparedness week. As hurricane season approaches, it is important to plan ahead and take steps to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your home safe. Read on to learn more.
Important Steps to Take Before a Storm
Have a plan
Before a hurricane strikes, you and your family should plan should create a plan that would allow you to make the most of the situation if any damage is done to your home or possessions.
Keep your documents safe
Hurricanes and tropical storms can cause trees to land on houses, flooding to occur, and more. It is because of this that it is crucial to keep all of your important documents in a safe location that you can easily access after the storm is over. This should include your homeowners’ insurance policy.
Take inventory
Be sure to conduct an inventory of your property. The quickest and easiest way to do so is by taking thorough photos of the inside and outside of the property. These pictures can cover broad ground, such as the walls and flooring. However, it can be beneficial to take photos of specific items you own as well, such as furniture, appliances, electronics, etc. It may also help to photograph the barcodes on these products so they can easily be appraised if any damage is done during the storm.
What Should I Include in a Disaster Kit?
While anticipating an approaching storm, be sure to think about what should be kept on hand during this time. By recommendation of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, a well-stocked emergency preparedness kit should last a minimum of seven days. Your kit should vary based on your and your family’s specific needs, but some general items include:
- Water
- Food
- Cooking supplies
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags
- Clothing
- First aid kits, prescription medication, and other necessary medicines
- Toiletries and cleaning supplies
- A battery-operated radio
- Cash
- Special items as per each individual’s (or pet’s) needs
